New Years Day | Kasuga Taisha

As part of the New Years traditional, I visited the shrine today. There are shrines in almost every community. I decided to visit Kasuga Taisha shrine, one of the most famous shrines in Japan. Packed as it was, the line moved swiftly and smoothly.

After entering, in front of the shrine, people would throw money into a pit (approx 10m X 2m), clap their hands and make a wish for 2006. People would continue walking towards stalls to draw a bamboo stick marked with a number from a cylinder for a fortune teller sheet.

Being unable to read Japanese fully, I can only hope my sheet was for the best. It would then be tied to a tree for it to prosper.
